Goodbye 2011 and Hellow 2012

Another year. That’s what 2011 was. It wasn’t a year where compromise was forged, where national interests were made paramount, or where facts took the front seat to spin and brinkmanship. Instead, Congress is at an all-time low approval rating of 11%, the presidential field (from any direction) is a mess, and the problems that plagued us in 2010 are still very much present going into 2012.

However, we also achieved a lot in spite of this political gridlock. Through our advocacy efforts and the input from ASCE members, we fought tirelessly for the repeal of the 3% Withholding Tax.  In the past six months, we have released two major studies showing the critical link between deficient transportation and water infrastructure and America’s economic future.

We now have a near consensus in the Senate and the House of Representatives that investing in transportation and our infrastructure is a problem that needs to be solved now, and not later. Across the board we have seen bipartisan proposals that seek to bridge the spending gap and recognize that working across the aisle is the only way to get the job done. There is no Republican or Democratic way to build a bridge. This was showcased recently by the 111 Democrats and Republicans in the House who wrote a letter to Speaker Boehner urging a long-term spending bill to adequately fund America’s failing infrastructure. If we push even harder next year, the possibility is very real that we can get a multi-year transportation bill that adequately funds the highways, roads, and bridges that we use and often take for granted every day.

So looking forward, what can be done to make 2012 different than 2011? Well, first off we’ve got new economic reports coming out focused on the state of America’s energy transmission infrastructure as well as marine and air ports. The information provided will round out previous economic studies we’ve released in the Failure to Act serious and put us on track to release the 2013 Report Card.

Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy Shoot

 I remember years ago, when I was at MTV News, commenting on how I couldn’t wait until the day Lindsay Lohan was finally at a point in her life that she’d do Playboy. I never thought that day would come so soon, but I have seen the Lindsay Lohan Playboy pics — as most of you probably have already — and let me just say this: I’d fuck the snot out of her.

That said I thought her pom poms looked exquisite, but really, for $1 million dollars, Playboy should have gotten full frontal.

Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has also seen Lindsay’s nude photos, and is also apparently mad she doesn’t show puss. He recently bashed the has-been actress, saying that in the pictorial, she looks “like a series of toll booths.”

Here’s what Corey said: “If anyone hasn’t seen the Lindsey Lohan Playboy shots yet, save your fucking money. She looks like a series of toll booths. She looks like somebody has fucking tossed their fucking change into it, and you’re just like…ugh.”

Wow. Brutal, Corey. Tell us more, tell us more.

“I didn’t know you could airbrush that much — I’ve gotta be honest — because her body is, like, it’s okay, but her face is, like, [makes face like he just saw his parent’s boning]. Why Women Buried Alive

Islamabad - A Pakistani lawmaker defended a decision by southwestern tribesmen to bury five women alive because they wanted to choose their own husbands, and told stunned members of parliament this week to spare him their outrage.

"These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," Israr Ullah Zehri, of Baluchistan province, said on Saturday.

"Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid."

The women, three of whom were teenagers, were first shot and then thrown into a ditch.

They were still breathing as their bodies were buried in rocks and mud, according to human rights activists, who said their only "crime" was that they wished to marry men of their own choosing

Zehri told a flabbergasted parliament that Baluch tribal traditions helped stop obscenity. Then he asked fellow lawmakers not to make a big fuss about it.

Many stood up in protest, saying the executions were "barbaric" and demanding that discussions continue on Monday. But a handful said it was an internal matter.

"I was shocked," said lawmaker Nilofar Bakhtiar, who pushed for legislation calling for perpetrators of so-called honour killings to be punished when she served as minister of women's affairs.

"I feel we've gone back to the starting point again. It's really sad for me."

The brutal killings allegedly occurred one month ago in Baba Kot, a village in Jafferabad district, after the women decided to defy tribal elders and arrange marriages in a civil court, the Asian Human Rights Commission said.

They were abducted at gunpoint by six men and driven to a remote field, where they were beaten, shot and then buried alive, it said, accusing local authorities of trying to hush up the killings.

One of perpetrators was allegedly related to a top provincial official, the commission said. - Sapa-AP
